EW0404 Seismic Reflection/Refraction
Seismic:Reflection:MCS
Processed multichannel seismic data across the Caribbean-northeastern South America arc-continent collision zone, acquired during the R/V Maurice Ewing survey EW0404 (2004)
Three teams were involved in the active-source seismic field program: 1) A science party aboard the R/V Maurice Ewing (co-chief scientists P. Mann and D. Sawyer) acquired approximately 6000 km of seismic reflection data. 2) A science party aboard the R/V Seward Johnson II (chief scientist G. Christeson, cruise report) deployed and recovered ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs) along 5 transects; the Ewing provided the seismic source for these instruments. 3) A science party in Venezuela and the ABC islands deployed and recovered seismographs along 4 transects and the island arc; the Ewing and 8 land shots provided the seismic source for these instruments. The purpose was to carry out a geologic-geophysical investigation to test hypotheses related to arc-continent collision and accretion, HP/LT rock exhumation and development of folded belts. Funded by NSF grant OCE0003588.
