Join RV Falkor and ROV SuBastian for the second dive of the Northern Depths of the Great Barrier Reef expedition. We are currently located 68 nautical miles (125 km) offshore of Townsville, QLD in the Central Great Barrier Reef, where we have previously mapped a large undersea landslide that resulted from the collapse of the nearby reef edge.
Today's dive is on the steep scarp face that has resulted from part of the reef front collapsing during that undersea landslide some time in the geological past. We will dive from the base of the deep reef front and make our way up through the mesophotic twilight zone towards the edge of the continental shelf. We are exploring the twilight habitats in this area and are particularly interested in the corals and sponges living here.

Join RV Falkor and ROV SuBastian for the third dive of the Northern Depths of the Great Barrier Reef expedition. Today we are exploring the side walls of Noggin Canyon in the Central Great Barrier Reef, seaward of Flora Passage. We will use the high resolution cameras and robotic arm of ROV SuBastian to observe and collect samples of the geology and organisms from the canyon side walls. A dive across the canyon axis and steep side walls can reveal whether terrestrial sediments from on land are deposited here during low-stand sea levels. Our transect will start at 1000 m water depth and ascent to 700 m.
This ROV Dive is part of the first leg of our expedition to the Northern Depths of the Great Barrier Reef, led by Dr Robin Beaman from James Cook University, with a science team of national and international collaborators.

Join RV Falkor and ROV SuBastian for the fourth dive of the Northern Depths of the
Great Barrier Reef expedition. Today we are exploring the side walls of Rodda
Canyon in the northern Great Barrier Reef, seaward of Princess Charlotte Bay. A
dive across the canyon axis will reveal the type of sediments on the canyon floor. We
will use the high resolution cameras and robotic arm of ROV SuBastian to observe
and collect samples of the geology and organisms from the canyon side walls. The
dive will end at the crest of the ridgeline at the top of the canyon side wall.
This ROV Dive is part of the second leg of our expedition to explore the Northern
Depths of the Great Barrier Reef, led by Dr Robin Beaman from James Cook
University, with a science team of national and international collaborators.

Join RV Falkor and ROV SuBastian for the fifth dive of the Northern Depths of the
Great Barrier Reef expedition. Today we are exploring an unusual and newly
mapped seamount-like feature we are calling Tydeman Knoll.
A dive up to the base of the knoll and traverse along the steep face to the summit
may reveal it’s geological origin and any associated marine life. We will use the high
resolution cameras and robotic arm of ROV SuBastian to observe and collect
samples of the geology and organisms from the knoll.
This ROV Dive is part of the second leg of our expedition to explore the northern
depths and outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef, led by Dr Robin Beaman from
James Cook University, with a science team of national and international
collaborators.

Join RV Falkor and ROV SuBastian for the sixth dive of the Northern Depths of the
Great Barrier Reef expedition. We are currently located offshore of Cape York in the
northern Great Barrier Reef, where we have been mapping the outer edge of the reef
with RV Falkor’s advanced multibeam sonar seafloor mapping system.
Today’s ROV dive is on the steep front of an un-named reef seaward of Noddy Reef.
The dive site is at the head of a submarine canyon that connects the deep ocean
basin with the shallow continental shelf and coral reefs. We will use the high
resolution cameras and robotic arm of ROV SuBastian to explore and sample the
geological features and twilight habitats at this site. We are particularly interested in
the corals and sponges living here.

Join RV Falkor and ROV SuBastian for the seventh dive of the Northern Depths of
the Great Barrier Reef expedition. Today we are exploring a very steep vertical cliff
face that is over 400m high onto a flat ledge at around 600m water depth.
ROV SuBastian will fly up the face of a canyon that resembles a large “plunge pool”
carved out by an ancient waterfall in the long geological past. The high-resolution
video imagery from ROV SuBastian’s cameras may reveal the layers of ancient rock
and sediments that underlie the foundations of The Great Barrier Reef. We will
collect geological and biological samples of the corals and sponges that use this
deep, steep feature as habitat.
This ROV Dive is part of the second leg of our expedition to explore the northern
depths and outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef, led by Dr Robin Beaman from
James Cook University, with a science team of national and international
collaborators.

Join RV Falkor as we celebrate ROV SuBastian’s 400 th dive, since its first dive in
2016 in Guam.
This is the eighth dive of the ‘Northern Depths of the Great Barrier Reef’ expedition.
Today we are exploring the steep southern flank of Wishbone Reef, within the
prominent Wreck Bay that lies offshore of Cape York Peninsula. The dive will
investigate a series of pinnacles in about 500 m depth for evidence of ancient
drowned reefs, then climb into the mesophotic depths of Wishbone Reef for corals
and other marine life.

Join RV Falkor as we conduct ROV SuBastian’s 401st dive on a newly discovered
500 m tall reef.
This is the nineth dive of the ‘Northern Depths of the Great Barrier Reef’ expedition.
Today we are exploring this 500 m tall ‘detached’ reef, one of seven other detached
reefs offshore of Cape York Peninsula, which lie upon a ~500 m deep ledge
extending out from below the Great Barrier Reef shelf. The dive will cross the
broader base, then climb the steep flanks of the reef to the summit at about 50 m
depth - an underwater mountain climb to find out what is living on this newly
discovered reef.

Join RV Falkor and ROV SuBastian for the ninth and final dive of the Northern
Depths of the Great Barrier Reef expedition. We will close out Leg 2 of the voyage
with a deep dive to over 2000 m in the newly mapped Wreck Bay.
Dr. Dhugal Lindsay from the Japan Agency for Marine Science and Technology
Center (JAMSTEC) will join us remotely to collect high resolution video imagery of
water column plankton and soft-bodied jellies. Dr Lindsay will use the data to
understand the geographic distribution of these animals throughout the region, and
with depth.
ROV SuBastian will then fly up the steep vertical wall that resembles a large “plunge
pool” carved out by an ancient waterfall in the long geological past. The high-
resolution video imagery from ROV SuBastian’s cameras may reveal the layers of
ancient rock and sediments that underlie the foundations of The Great Barrier Reef.
