Details
ROV dive on northern end of North Flinders reef to observe and sample seabed biota and geological features. Upon arrival to the seafloor the vehicle will begin transiting upslope following the waypoints listed below (starting from WP 4). • Features of special interest will be captured in multiple images and in Squidle. • Biological samples will not be collected as the requisite permit has been delayed. • Sediment and rock samples will be collected during the transect. • 500m transect following the protocol (in the same folder: FK200308 Quantitative imagery transect methods.docx). Recommended speed is 0.3 knot at an altitude of 2m above seafloor or rock walks. Calibrate the lighting at the beginning of the dive as per the settings of FK200308 if possible.

Activity Objectives: 1. Cairns Seamount is a very high priority for Dhugal’s midwater plankton survey Mid-water plankton timed descent: Slow oblique descent at 10m/min. Pre-dive CTD cast will inform what depth we commence the timed descent. Possible suction sampling of water column squishies, but timed descent is more important than collecting. At seabed, look around for jellies etc for suction sampling. 2. Geological sampling of seabed substrate. Rocks should be in-situ (i.e. broken off of outcrops, not picked up loose off the seabed). We are targeting rock outcrops at intervals as we transit shallower upslope. Especially interested in 150m to 60m IF we can get that shallow depending on SuBastian temperature and total dive time. 3. Biological obs/sampling. Permits for hard coral, soft coral, black coral & sponges. 4. Standard 500m benthic transect. Calibrate the lighting at the beginning of the dive as per the settings of FK200308 if possible. Hold at 2m altitude, speed 0.3 knots (we are waiting for confirmation from the PI onshore if this should be 0.3 m/sec). 5. Exploratory observations and opportunistic sampling to end of dive, following waypoints upslope.
