P-wave velocity model (ASCII format) of the Cocos plate and Guerrero gap, Mexico subduction zone (MGL2204)
This data set presents a 255 km-long trench-parallel, 2-D P-wave velocity (Vp) model of the incoming Cocos plate outboard of the Guerrero Gap and neighboring segments of the Mexico subduction zone. This 2-D profile was created by jointly inverting refraction and reflection travel times interpreted on coincident downward-continued multichannel seismic (MCS) and oceanic bottom seismometer (OBS) data acquired on 2022 R/V Marcus G. Langseth cruise MGL2204 as part of ¡ME GUSTA! (Mexico Experiment in Guerrero to Understand Shallow Transients near Acapulco) project. The travel time data set consists of Pg arrivals, Moho reflections (PmP), and mantle refractions (Pn) recorded on 24 OBS gathers which yielded 3,597 Pg, 4,830 PmP, and 4,400 Pn picks out to 200 km offset. We incorporated a subset of 4,280 Pg picks interpreted on the MCS gathers out to 12.5 km offset. We followed a Monte Carlo approach and took the average of 100 solutions to be the final Vp model; this also allows for an estimate of Vp uncertainty, which we take as one standard deviation. The data file containing the Vp and standard deviation models is in comma-separated ASCII text format. File headers include model distance along the profile (x), depth (z), latitude (deg), longitude (deg), Vp (km/s), and standard deviation (km/s). The columns in the text files are arranged as follows: Model distance (x), depth (z), longitude (deg), latitude (deg), Vp (km/s), and standard deviation (km/s). For the Vp and standard deviation models, the model dimensions are 11208 in x (25 m spacing) and 1604 in z (12.5 m spacing), and subseafloor regions without ray coverage (excluding small gaps between rays within the crust and mantle) have been given a value of NaN. The data was generated as part of the project called Quantifying incoming plate hydration and role of fluids on megathrust properties in and around the Guerrero Gap, offshore Mexico. Funding was provided through NSF awards OCE20-16062, OCE20-16056 and OCE20-16057.
