In the deep sea, where crushing pressure and scarce food supply challenge life, there are environments in which life thrives, supporting multiple species. In this dive, we descend to about one thousand meters depth in a sector of the Argentine Continental Slope where we expect to find a coral mound. Coral mounds are accumulations of calcified coral structures that build up over thousands of years. These three-dimensional structures provide shelter, nursery grounds, spawning areas, and feeding habitats for many other species. We will study their environmental and biological characteristics to better understand their distribution in the Argentine deep sea. We
will be located off the coast of Buenos Aires Province, specifically at: 804.7 km distance from Darregueira (provincia de Buenos Aires) 924.7 km distance from Laguna Don Tomás (Santa Rosa, La Pampa) 1050.4 km distance from Mercedes (Corrientes) 1133.8 km from Villa Mercedes (San Luis) 1299.7 km from Monte Comán (Mendoza)

We will descend to a water depth of approximately 3,000 m to explore the wall of a submarine canyon that incises the slope over 750 m. After diving roughly 150 m along the thalweg (the canyon floor), we will ascend just east of a prominent, 25 m-high bumpy feature that crosses the canyon wall transversely. Over a distance of approximately 1.5 km, we will document habitat variations across different depths, as well as associated geological features. During the last few hundred meters of the dive, just below the canyon rim, we will explore a steep wall where we expect to encounter exposed rock outcrops.
We will be positioned off the coast of Buenos Aires Province, specifically at:
720 km (390 nautical miles) east of Darregueira (Buenos Aires)
870 km (470) nm) southeast of Laguna Don Tomás in Santa Rosa (La Pampa)

During this special christmas dive we will descend to a water depth of 1264 m to explore the wall of a submarine canyon that incises the slope. After diving roughly 100 m along the thalweg (the canyon floor), we will ascend 400 m exploring a crest that crosses the canyon in SW-NE direction. Over approximately 2 Km, we will document benthic habitat variations across different depths, as well as associated
geological features. On this occasion we are diving in the deep sea off Puerto Madryn at approximately 14.827 km distance to the North Pole and Santa Clause’s house.

During this special Christmas dive, we will descend to 2,700 meters depth to explore the wall of a submarine canyon, which cuts into the continental slope with a vertical relief of 625 meters. From the deepest point of the canyon, the
thalweg, we will begin our ascent, traversing different terrace levels until reaching a prominent structure at 2,420 meters depth. This irregular structure, running parallel to the canyon wall, will allow us to study habitat variability and the associated invertebrate communities. During the final 150 meters of the dive, we will conclude the transect by ascending directly along the canyon wall.

During this dive in the Malvinas Basin area, we will for the first time visually observe the first active chemosynthetic ecosystem discovered in the Argentine deep sea. This site is a pockmark, an oval-shaped crater, where Bravo and others documented the presence of gas on the seafloor, including methane escaping as curtains of bubbles rising hundreds of meters into the water column, as well as evidence of chemosynthetic feeding in benthic organisms. The crater is located at approximately 450 m depth and is about 400 m in diameter. This exploration with the ROV SuBastian represents an unprecedented effort to conduct detailed studies of the influence of methane on hydrographic, biogeochemical, sedimentological, and biological properties. We will investigate whether habitats such as bacterial mats, methane-derived carbonates, and high-density patches of invertebrates are present.

During this dive in the Malvinas Basin, we will further explore chemosynthetic habitat patches associated with a methane-derived carbonate mound previously visited during ROV dive S0889. The area is characterized by a “horseshoe mound” geomorphology, where rocky outcrops formed by methane seepage alternate with soft sediments at depths of up to 627m. In Argentine waters, the biodiversity and environmental context of these chemosynthetic ecosystems remain poorly understood. This dive will improve our understanding of habitat patchiness and the biological complexity of this system.

During this dive in the Malvinas Basin, we will explore an active pockmark, a crater-like structure in the seafloor modeled by gas seepage. This pockmark located at 420 m has a diameter of 300 m and exhibits gas bubbles in contact with the seafloor in the acoustic record. Curiously, to the sides of the pockmark there are two additional crater-like structures attached to it. During this dive we want to explore the diversity of habitats and lifeforms, and understand their ecological functions.

Dive Description:
In this dive in the Malvinas Basin, we explore an erosive wall along the southern side of the Malvinas Trench. Starting at 810 m depth, we first observe life in soft sediments before ascending the wall. Along the way, we will study
the animals we encounter, their diversity, biology, how they live, and how they interact with each other and with their environment. This includes examining environmental features through chemical, geological, and oceanographic
observations, as we document how habitats and ecosystems change with depth until reaching 400 m.
