Grain size data for sediment cores collected in the water column of Monterey Canyon, offshore California
Sediment grain size data from Anderson sediment trap samples collected in Monterey Canyon as part of the Monterey Canyon Coordinated Canyon Experiment (CCE). The CCE was set up to measure the passage of sediment gravity flows down Monterey Canyon. Anderson sediment traps are designed to passively collect particulate material as it settles from the water column into a tube. This effectively provides a record of the sediment and particulate matter passing through the water column. Sediment traps were deployed on moorings for three consecutive six-month periods from October 2015 to April 2017. After recovery these tubes were logged with a multi-sensor core logger and a CT scanner and subsequently extruded, and sampled. The grain size data files are in Excel spreadsheet multi-tab format. File names begin with MBCCE, then mooring name, followed by sediment trap name, height above the bottom, and then the deployment date (yyyymmdd). For more specific information about each data file, download the excel file "CCE Files and Stations" and review the "Science Report" under Documents. Funding for the project was provided by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Natural Environment Research Council (NE/K011480/1), U.S. Geological Survey, Ocean University of China, and Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology.
