Abstract:
This 2008 R/V Sonne expedition to the area of the December 2004 Sumatran earthquake was an collaborative effort between UK, Indonesian, and U.S. scientists. The purpose was to test the hypothesis that landward-vergent (as opposed to seaward-vergent) thrusting promotes rupture to the deformation front, and consequent possibility for tsunamigenic earthquakes.
