Marine Geoscience Data System
PortAransas_Goff Bathymetry
Processed high-resolution gridded bathymetry data from Aransas Pass and Lydia Ann Channel (Texas) collected before and after Hurricane Harvey of 2017
These six processed multibeam bathymetry grids document the submarine morphology of Aransas Pass and Lydia Ann Channel (Texas) in 2009, 2012, and soon after the passage of Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Aransas Pass is the entrance to the Corpus Christi Ship Channel; it connects the Gulf of Mexico to Corpus Christi Bay to the south and, via Lydia Ann Channel, Aransas Bay to the north. The area was heavily impacted by wind damage and surge waters during Hurricane Harvey. The data files are in NetCDF format (suitable for importing to GMT scripts). The 2009 and 2012 data were collected as part of the University of Texas Marine Geology and Geophysics Field Course, which is funded by multiple donations from companies and individuals (see https://ig.utexas.edu/marine-and-tectonics/ut-marine-geology-geophysics-field-course/). The post-hurricane data were funded by the UT Jackson School of Geosciences Rapid Response Endowment. The three surveys were conducted with a Reson Seabat 8101 (2009), 7101 (2012) and T50-P (2017), with boom-mounted transducers affixed to coastal research vessels. Data were processed using Caris software. Depths are in meters. Mercator projection with WGS84. Navigation and boat attitude were determined with differential GPS and an Applannix IMU. Tide corrections from a local station were applied. However, in comparing different years we found roughly constant offsets in the depths to fixed and immutable objects on the seafloor (including two ship wrecks in Lydia Ann Channel, and jetty bollards in Aransas Pass); the cause of these offsets is not certain. This induced us to apply a constant correction to the 2009 and 2012 data sets (see headers) to align with the 2017 data.
