Web Services

We deliver catalogs, maps, and data through standard programmatic interfaces:

  1. Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) WxS Services.

Our Web Map Service (WMS) allows any OGC-enabled client to create map imagery from our global multi-resolution topography synthesis. Specify one of these urls to your client -

    http://www.marine-geo.org/services/wms?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS&version=1.1.1

    (Mercator world)

    http://www.marine-geo.org/services/wms_mask?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS&version=1.1.1

(Mercator world - masked for multibeam tracks)

Our Web Feature Service (WFS) allows any OGC-enabled client to access our global catalog of station events (cores and dredges, camera tows, CTD stations, instrument deployments, etc.) and physical samples (biology, rock, sediment, fluid). Specify this URL to your client -

    http://www.marine-geo.org/services/wfs?request=GetCapabilities&service=WFS&version=1.0.0

We are also developing a Web Coverage Service (WCS) to provide access to raster data sets, and a Web Terrain Service (WTS) to provide three-dimensional perspective scenes.

We use the MapServer software platform as our backend.

  2. A variety of OGC-enabled clients are available, both freeware and commercial, including the User-Friendly Desktop Internet GIS (uDig), GeoMapApp, Gaia, NASA World Wind, and ArcGIS.

  3. Catalog Services. We offer simple REST-type (read more) services to directly query our repository in real-time.
  4. a.) Our "getVocabulary" service exposes a specified controlled vocabulary -

  5. Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvest (OAI-PMH).

Our OAI-PMH service provides NOAA Metadata Manager Repository (NMMR)-compliant FGDC metadata records for our multibeam data sets. You may explore and harvest records here -
