In a major addition to the database, basic cruise information, navigation and primary underway data sets collected during expeditions of the L. Gould from 2003 to 2007 are now available. Jacobs, ANSLOPE Leg_III), NBP0602 (J.Stock, McMurdo - Punta Arenas, Chile), NBP0301B (Walker Smith, McMurdo-McMurdo), NBP0403 (Cande, Lyttelton, NZ - Punta Arenas, Chile) and NBP9504 (seabeam test, off New Zealand) were recently added to the Global Multi-Resolution Topography compilation.

GeoMapApp version 1.6.4 released. Pan function added; ability to import and save grids in GMT v3 and v4 NetCDF formats. Profiles can be taken across all imported and high-resolution grids. Interface for Multi-Channel Seismics and for downloading swath ping files improved.

NBP0305A multibeam data (Chief Scientist Walker Smith, New Zealand - McMurdo) was added to the Global Multi-Resolution Topography compilation and accessible through GeoMapApp.

The multibeam data from Antarctic cruises NBP0506, contributed by Miles McPhee, which included data in the vicinity of the Maud Rise and data from NBP0402 (Visbeck, McMurdo - New Zealand) has been added to the GeoMapApp bathymetry tiles.

November 2007

At the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, additional multibeam swath data as well as bathymetric grids and images included for Eugene Domack's cruise NBP0107 (Dec 2001 - Jan 2002). Gravity/magnetics data, sound velocity profiles, JGOFS and ADCP data, and bathymetric grids and images, added for Ross Sea cruise NBP0402 (Feb-Apr 2004, Chief Scientist Martin Visbeck). For southwest Pacific cruises NBP0403 (Apr-May 2004, principal investigators Cande/Stock) now available are raw and processed multibeam swath files, bathymetric grids and images, CTD, sound velocity, JGOFS and ADCP data, gravity and magnetics files. For the more recent southwest Pacific cruise NBP0607A (Aug-Sep 2006, Chief Scientist Marcel Croon), raw and processed multibeam swath files, sound velocity, JGOFS and ADCP data, gravity and magnetics files added to database. Single-channel seismic reflection and sub-bottom data available for SHALDRIL cruise NBP0602A (Feb-Apr 2006, Chief Scientist John Anderson), along with raw and processed multibeam bathymetry swath files, grids and images, and ADCP and sound velocity data. Single-channel seismics data, ADCP and gravity/magnetics data added for West Antarctic cruise NBP9902 (Feb-Mar 1999, Chief Scientist John Anderson). Raw and processed multibeam data and ADCP added for sea trials leg NBP0607C (Oct 2006, Chief Scientist Joann Stock). Basic database entries created for transit/maintenance legs NBP0704, NBP0705, NBP0706, NBP0707, NBP0708 and Gould leg LMG0707.

October 2007

For NBP0506 (Jul-Sep 2005, Chief Scientist Miles McPhee), all digital data added to database, including raw and processed multibeam swath files, bathymetric grids and images, CTD, sound velocity and ADCP data, gravity and magnetics files. Along the western margin of the Antarctic Peninsula, updated multibeam data and bathymetric grids and images added for NBP0201 (Jan-Mar 2001, Chief Scientist John Anderson). Multibeam data and bathymetric grids and images can now be downloaded for NBP0703 (Mar-May 2007, chief scientists Anderson and Hallet). Basic cruise entry, ADCP and JGOFS data added for LMG0706 (May 2007, chief scientists Sidell/Costa). NBP0407 (Bartek) Lyttelton - McMurdo multibeam was added to the GeoMapApp bathymetry tiles.

GeoMapApp version 1.6.2 released. Includes improved interfaces for multi- and single-channel seismics and digitizer operations. Graphing tool for imported data tables refined. Lasso tool improved. John Hall's archive of Arctic sea bottom photos added. Multibeam swath file download interface updated.

The interface for Create Maps and Grids now uses Google Maps (TM) functionality to access the MGDS Global Multi-Resolutional digital elevation model Topography (GMRT).

August 2007

This month, the multibeam data from a number of Antarctic cruises was added to the GeoMapApp bathymetry tiles. In the McMurdo/ice edge/New Zealand region, NBP0306 (Luyendyk) and NBP0301A (Bart) are now in the tiles. NBP9908 (Chile to New Zealand, Cande) and NBP9806A, a transit from Honolulu to Western Samoa, are also visible in the GeoMapApp South Polar dataset.

New audio-visual tutorials added for GeoMapApp.

July 2007

New gridded bathymetric compilation for the Amundsen Sea contributed by Frank Nitsche and colleagues added to database.

Multibeam swath data files for NBP0406, contributed by Steve Cande, added new data to the GeoMapApp bathymetric tiles in the southern Indian Ocean en route to New Zealand from Cape Town.

GeoMapApp version 1.6.0 released. Alternative base maps loaded using a Web Map Service; imported data tables exported as Google Earth (tm) KMZ files and scaled by colour and size. Lasso tool allows selection of points; tabular data can be sorted. Individual swath bathymetry data files now identified and linked to data download web page. Multi-Channel Seismics, PetDB and DSDP/ODP interfaces improved.

June 2007

The MGDS Global Multi-Resolutional digital elevation model Topography (GMRT) as used in GeoMapApp can now be viewed in Google (tm) Earth directly through our Web Map Service with faster loading and viewing performance. Download GMA4GE.kml and launch in GoogleEarth to explore.

The GeoMapApp bathymetry tileset was updated by the addition of NBP0301 (McMurdo/ice edge) contributed by Lou Bartek.

May 2007

Data from the major airborne geophysical SOAR survey of Lake Vostok have been added to the database (www.marine-geo.org/link/entry.php?id=SOAR-LVS). These data include gravity, radar, and laser altimetry data on ice surface topography (profile data) acquired and processed by the SOAR facility at UTIG, magnetic profile data acquired by SOAR and reduced by USGS, and final processed, cross-over corrected and leveled grids of gravity and magentics, ice thickness and bedrock elevation from M. Studinger LDEO (including detailed documentation on processing and publication list).

New color palettes for grid functions and improved user interface added to latest GeoMapApp release.

April 2007

A searchable menu tool and an upgraded and expanded WFS interface added to GeoMapApp. Direct WFS connections now available to station and physical sample feature information (including instruments, cores, dredges, borehole logs, earthquake catalogues, and so on) at IRIS, UNAVCO, NGDC, LDEO-BRG, PETDB and MGDS.

Multibeam and CTD data, and core log information added for NBP0505 (Jun-Jul 2005, Chief Scientist John Anderson).

Major new release of GeoMapApp (1.5.0) with simplifications and updates to the user interface. Options to import a variety of data types from the user's desktop including data tables, grids, and shapefiles can now be accessed under the File menu. Release includes a new option under the File menu to import data through an OGC-compliant Web Feature Service (WFS). Click on the Web Services link under our Tools and Services to access the MGDS beta-WFS.

December 2006

Complete field data from cruise NBP0603 (Eugene Domack) survey of Larson Ice Shelf added to database. Data include multibeam bathymetry field data, grids and images, gravity, single channel seismic and subbottom profile data, sound velocity profiles, ADCP, CTD data along with information about coring and grab and camera operations.

Interoperability project GEOWS with IRIS and UNAVCO presented at fall AGU meeting. As part of project IRIS, UNAVCO and MGDS have established a beta-version OGC-compliant Web Service for station information from their data holdings for the Gulf of California FS.

Field data from cruise NBP0601A (Walker Smith) survey to the Ross Sea now available. Data include single beam bathymetry field data, gravity, flourescence, current measurement, sound velocity profiles, ADCP, and CTD data along with biological and fluid sampling information.

Field data from cruise NBP0601 (Giacomo DiTullio) study of phytoplankton community dynamics in the Ross Sea now available. Data include single beam bathymetry field data, gravity, ADCP, CTD, and fluid chemistry data.

Marine, airborne, and land gravity profile data in the earlier ADGRAV database developed at LDEO by Bob Arko and Robin Bell have been migrated to the integrated AMBS database and can be accessed through both Data Link and GeoMapApp (Custom Data Viewers – Bathymetry, Gravity and Magnetics Profiles and select ADGRAV database), in addition to the original ADGRAV search interface.

October 2006

Complete field data from cruise NBP0602A (John Anderson) SHALDRIL project added to database. Data include multibeam bathymetry field data, gravity, magnetics, subbottom profile data, sound velocity profiles.


Field data from NBP0508 (Patrick Neale), study of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton in the Ross Sea now available. Data include single beam bathymetry field data, gravity, ADCP, CTD, and fluid chemistry data.


Complete field data from cruise NBP0507 (Marcel Croon) added to database. Data include multibeam bathymetry field data, gravity, magnetics, subbottom profile data, sidescan sonarm sound velocity profiles,CTD and JGOFS data files,CTD, links to SIO for ADCP data, and satellite meterological data.

Complete field data from cruise NBP0505 (John Anderson) added to database. Data include multibeam bathymetry ping files, grids and images, gravity, magnetics, and subbottom profile data, sound velocity profiles, JGOFS data files, with links to SIO for ADCP data.

September 2006

Multibeam bathymetry swath files, grids and maps and underway geophysics from NBP0602 (Stock and Cande) added to database. Underway data includes, gravity, magnetics, subbottom and ADCP data. Survey includes coverage of the Bellingshausen-Antarctica-Pacific Triple Junction.

Select near bottom photographs collected at core stations conducted these legacy Eltanin, Vema, and Conrad expeditions have been scanned from negatives and georeferenced and can be browsed in GeoMapApp (Available Data – General Viewers – Tables – Seafloor Photos).

Legacy single channel seismic (SCS) reflection data project completed. A total of 415 legs of SCS profiles spanning the global ocean and including the Southern Ocean can now be viewed in GeoMapApp.

July 2006

Bathymetry grids and maps from Scott Gallager's REMUS survey, from the Polar Remote Interactive Marine Observatory (PRIMO) project, now available through Data Link (entry: Palmer_Gallager).

For cruises from the 2005-2006 field season and future expeditions, bathymetry grids and maps made during each cruise will also be added to database, in addition to swath ping data. Also beginning with the 2005-2006 field season, a broader suite of data types from Palmer expeditions will now be added to the database. These may include (depending on cruise) MGD77 files, JGOF files, XBTs, CTDs, sound velocity profiles, cruise satellite images and MOCNESS data.

Beta release of multi-resolution gridded global bathymetry and topography data set for viewing in GoogleEarth (http://www.marine-geo.org/Data4GoogleEarth.html). Download kml file, launch GoogleEarth and browse and zoom on the available seafloor bathymetry.

March 2006

New search capability now available in Data Link. In addition to the ability to search by geographic area, ISS, investigator and cruise ID, you can now search by the full list of data types or device types cataloged in the database. Use these search options to find out where the selected data type has been collected and to download any data files available in the database.

Many new data sets now available for exploring through the Databases menu in GeoMapApp. Select Import DataLoadFileBrowse DataBasesGlobal.

GeoMapApp v1.3.0 released with new automatic focus as well as new features in the Import Data option on the Databases menu. Caution: after you load a grid in GeoMapApp the automatic focus will also automatically load a new grid each time you zoom and pan. Dispose of grid before zooming for best performance.

New option in GeoMapApp to save images as “.kmz” files for viewing in GoogleEarth. With this option,  use GeoMapApp to dynamically generate a map of area of interest, save image as .kmz file to your desktop and then open with GoogleEarth.

Web Map Service (WMS) beta service now deployed to serve our global bathymetry. WMS is a standard for web-services, proposed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Web Map Service enables web-based creation of maps from raster and vector datasets. The generated maps can be visualized by common web-browsers and/or OGC-enabled client applications.

New options are now available within Data Link's Map View display;

1. Beta version of new option in Map View to view global bathymetry (Global DEM option). Users can zoom in to display higher resolution bathymetry. Beta version has problem with map display at +/-180°longitude which affects maps for Lau Basin region. 

2. Query function (under “Mode” button) now available within Map View links to further information on cruise/dive survey tracks or station information.

An ISO 19115-compliant profile for cruise metadata has been developed for use as a REST-based web service.

Project names, award numbers and links to project websites for many Palmer cruises have been added in an ongoing effort.

August 2005

Personnel information has been included in the database for 32 N.B.Palmer cruise legs from 2002 through 2005.

July 2005

Web-based "Map View" tool is now available to display cruise/dive tracks and borders/coastlines on world map with pan/zoom capability.  It is based on open source MapServer GIS software.

A new version of GeoMapApp (1.2_08) includes access to Alvin dive photos and a prototype GIS layer interface.  An interface to DSDP data has also been added.

April 2005

New forms for reporting cruise information are now available for downloading.  These forms are designed to capture who, what, when, where a cruise as well as inventories of all data collected, line logs, deployed instrument information, station, and sample logs.

Bathymetry data from NBP0201, contributed by John Anderson, released and incorporated into GeoMapApp global bathymetry compilations.

Release of GeoMapApp 1.2 with several new features. Data sources for topography data in map view now dynamically displayed including acknowledgement of nation of origin. New “Import Data” option available. Option permits users to import their own data tables (text and Excel) and display on bathymetry data, including color coding and symbol scaling based on data values.

Global heat flow data compilation including data from the Southern Ocean now accessible through the “Import Data” option in GeoMapApp. Database from Dallas Abbott.

July 2004

New capability to display crustal age along seismic profiles available with Single Channel Seismic option in GeoMapApp.  Ages are sampled along seismic tracklines from the global digital age model developed by Mueller, et al.

Reorganization of the web pages for the Ridge2000 and Margins Data Portals, the Ridge Multibeam Bathymetry Synthesis, Antarctic Multibeam Bathymetry Synthesis, and Seismic Field Data Center into a central site for all projects of the MarineGeoDMS (www.marine-geo.org).

Database schema development continues and database is populated with basic cruise metadata for expeditions of the Palmer and Gould.

GeoMapApp is further developed. Begin incorporating single channel seismic data from the Southern Oceans collected during legacy expeditions of the R/V Eltanin, Vema and Conrad. Demo viewer developed for radar data from Lake Vostok contributed by Bell and Studinger.

May 2003

Beta web site for the Antarctic Multibeam Bathymetry Synthesis established.

GeoMapApp now available to browse a limited bathymetry data set in south Polar Projection. Limited capability to view other datasets including trackline geophysical data.

Multibeam and geophysical data from Nathaniel B. Palmer from 1992 to current is acquired for database. PIs are contacted to obtain data and permissions are requested to incorporate data into synthesis.
